How To Choose A Vibrating Poker That Suits Your Specifications

Posted by James Jordan on Jan 2, 2019 10:13:00 AM

Choosing a vibrating poker for your construction project is a bit complicated, especially if you are doing it for the first time. While you can always get a consultation from a supplier, it’s good to have a general idea of what you are looking for.

Each vibrating poker has several parameters you should pay attention to when selecting the right equipment for your work site. Before diving into the sea of poker vibrator specifications, learn as much as possible about the project you need it for. This information is vital to finding the best machine for your requirements.

1) Head Size And Capacity

Poker head size is one of the most important parameters you should be considering. Opting for a larger or a smaller head size than necessary may lead to improper concrete compaction. The head sizes range from 20 to 90 mm.

  • High volume pours (footings, foundations) require a minimum head size of 75 mm. Such pokers provide a vibration capacity of about 20 m³/hour to 35 m³/hour.
  • Medium volume pours (bridges, retaining walls) call for a head size between 45 mm and 75 mm. They provide a vibration capacity between 10 m³/hour and 35 m³/hour.
  • Low volume pours (floor slabs, beams) require small heads between 20 mm and 35 mm. The capacity is 1.5 m³/hour to 6 m³/hour.

2) Power Supply

Even though high-quality pokers are equipped with frequency converters to ensure their compatibility with different power sources, it’s important to choose a vibrating poker that can work seamlessly with the outlet you have access to at the work site.

If you aren’t sure which power supply you’ll have, you’ll need to invest either in a power generator, a converter or an all-purpose poker.

If you have a large project, you may want to opt for a high cycle vibrator, which can convert a single-phase energy into a three phase for more consistent power.

3) Shaft Integrity

High-quality flexible shafts are a must-have for all vibrating pokers. The common shaft length is 5 metres. However, you can order a bespoke length from the equipment supplier if required.

In order to ensure the shaft quality and integrity, check for steel reinforcements in the hose to prevent shaft damage.

4) Respectable Manufacturer

Vibrating poker reliability depends heavily on the manufacturer. High-quality materials, powerful motors, reinforced flexible shafts, an integrated electrical overload protection system, and many more features aren’t guaranteed in case the supplier is not reliable.

A respectable manufacturer will offer vibrating pokers compliant with the required safety directives and standards, such as Machine Safety Regulations, Noise Directives, Electromagnetic Directives, and the like.

Vibrating pokers are portable and suitable for numerous jobs. Thus, it’s important to choose a durable and reliable machine to serve you for many years.
